Product Design
Product Design
The product development process must yield products that can be produced and sold profitably, yet profitability is often difficult to assess quickly and directly. The course looks at the steps followed in the modern simultaneous engineering process. We look at how a concept is generated to meet the needs of the customer, how the concept is selected, refined and developed into a prototype.
Duration : 3 Weeks
A successful product development process must yield products that can be produced and sold profitably, yet profitability is often difficult to assess quickly and directly. The execution of the product development process has evolved from sequential (i.e. each step conceived of as a unit with clear inputs and outputs), to what is called simultaneous engineering where all product development steps are started as early as possible (simultaneously) in the product development process. The course covers product development process which consists of five phases- - Concept development
- - System-level design
- - Detail design
- - Introduction to 3D modelling
- - System-level design
- - Detail design
- - 3D design software (Inventor and Solidworks, 3D printing)
- - Rapid prototyping
- - Testing and refinement and
- - Production ramp-up.
Systems Engineering
Systems engineering (SE) is concerned with defining and implementing an approach to solving problems, while managing complexity and communicating effectively over the entire lifetime of a project.
Systems Engineering
Systems Engineering helps product designers to understand how the subsystems/components of their product will interact and or affect each other.
Duration : 3 Weeks
Students are taken through the Systems Engineering Process (SEP). SEP is a comprehensive, iterative and recursive problem-solving process, applied sequentially top-down by integrated teams. It transforms needs and requirements into a set of system product and process descriptions, generate information for decision-makers and provides input for the next level of development. The process is applied sequentially, one level at a time, adding additional detail and definition with each level of development. We use a practical case-based approach to covering the course. The course covers the following:- - Introduction to Systems Engineering
- - What is a system
- - System Engineering process
- - Requirements analysis
- - Functional analysis/allocation synthesis
- - UML model
- - Functional Flow Block Diagrams
- - Vee Model, Waterfall model
Critical Design Thinking
The course looks at the steps followed in the modern simultaneous engineering process. We look at how a concept is generated to meet the needs of the customer, how the concept is selected, refined and developed into a prototype.
Duration : 3 Weeks
In the course, you will learn- - The design thinking process, tips, and techniques
- - How to develop brainstorming and prototyping skills to spark creativity.
- - Get in the shoes of the product user to better address their needs
- - Identify the problems you face every day which you can address with the technical skills you have acquired.
- - Develop prototypes and test them to get to the best solution
- - Achieve a design thinking mindset for future success.
Strategic Thinking
Strategic thinking is the process of developing ideas to determine a course of action. This depends on critical and creative thinking ability as well as business knowledge, insights and experience. Each individual can contribute unique insights and perspectives into a team that can help to initiate and challenge the ideas and thought processes of others.
Duration : 3 Weeks
The course helps you to identify and plan the future strategy for your product, understand current and future challenges, as well as to forecast changes needed on the product, to be fit for the future.
The course covers the following:
- - Benchmark your product with leading products
- - How to perform a SWOT analysis
- - Identify future challenges
- - Plan a strategy for change
- - Communicate sensitively to those concerned
- - Operate within the legal frameworks
- - Intellectual Property (IP) laws
- - How to protect your product through IP laws
